School is out and I figured it’s time to update the blog! I might actually update this blog every now and then!

Anyway, so after a week or so of debugging things I finally figured out what the issue is symfony+godaddy.

From what I can tell, there is something wrong GoDaddy’s Apache configuration. Specifically, in PHP the gets populated with information that symfony is not expecting. To rectify this, I added the following line to my symfony front controller:

   = “”;

Additionally, in settings.yml I set:

.settings:
no_script_name: on

Anyway, this hack doesn’t fix everything. I could only use one project in the deployment - for some reason ALL the requests were always forwarded to my one project.

Moral of the story? Don’t use symfony on shared hosts.

I’m a big fan of Google and one of the products of theirs that I use regularly is the Google Toolbar. I’ve started customizing it more than just accepting the standard set of icons that they recommend, but I’ve run into a bit of a snag.

As you can see from the image above, I’ve got three icons that are all the same, but they’re for three different things.

Does anyone know how in the world I can change the icon that’s being displayed there?

It’s really annoying. I want to achieve something like Facebook uses (the icon next to them) that makes it really easy to see which button I need at a glance. As it stands right now I’ve got to remember,

“Okay was twitter the 2nd icon? Wait, no I added one GoDaddy, was it the first or 3rd?..No, TinyURL was in there

To help me keep my sanity, will someone please help me with this little problem?

Over at Search Engine Land they have this great article about keywords. It says that there are 8 keyword mistakes that are costing you money with your PPC account. Many people pick keywords that just don’t fit in their site, that are not relevant, or they are too broad. Sometimes you have to step outside the box and put yourself in your customers’ minds and try to think what keywords they are thinking about searching. Here are a few of the 8 common mistakes with our notes about them:

Choosing a single keyword is a poor choice, unless you are a powerful brand name and have been established. Single terms are overly competitive and expensive. They also tend to be very broad.

Some keywords are very hard to obtain rankings for. Some companies choose them blindly and realize later how much money they will have to spend to get top rankings. The real estate market is an excellent example. You need to pick your battles carefully.

The English language is growing all the time. The article suggests that you use Wordspy.com. It is a tool that helps you learn new expressions. Revisiting your keywords often arms you with performance data so you can refine your choices.

You can learn about the rest of the 8 keyword mistakes here.

So here I am, starting a brand spanking new website for reviewing different child care facilities. I figure maybe $100 will get me going godaddy.com and I will add the title webmaster to my resume. Think again.

It seems that running a website is a bit more expensive than I anticipated. To get a halfway decent set up I need to drop at least 300 bucks. I don’t care what facility your at $300 in our world is still a pretty big chunk of change. I also need to replace the camera that got stolen in Atlanta a few weeks ago, along with my voice recorder. Won’t be much of a facility review without some pictures.

So the website will need to wait until after our Houseparent Retreat in Alabama this August. I will still be hitting the road and reviewing a few facilities before then, but don’t look for anything to be up on the net until September.

I also need to do some serious research into how to secure the web site. You would be amazed at the comments and spam some sleaze bags leave on this blog. Everything from child porn links to electric lawn mowers.

Due to my recent education in web expense and evil spam, we all need to take a moment and thank a man that is responsible for the entire HP Network, Mike Hyde.

All those times I heard him complaining about spamming infidels, cost, upgrades and massive amounts of time spent working on the site, I thought he was just being kinda girly. After all, how hard is it to run a website?

Mike, thanks for creating and keeping this site running , even when most of us out here really can’t imagine the blood, sweat and tears involved in something like this.

Anyone that would like to donate, oh lets say a thousand bucks, to get the facility review up, give me a holla. (I know it’s a long shot, but it never hurts to beg). -Launch

Nowadays it’s either a “Destination Unreachable” or a simple placeholder page that greets many visitors to several popular Mac warez forum boards. Not that this is a simple case of filesharing. MSJ (http://macserialjunkie.com) and Mac-BB (http://mac-bb.org) are two very popular mac communities that have been receiving error messages lately, MSJ more then Mac-BB. Mac-BB has been down for several weeks, the suspected cause is a router failing. MSJ is more recent (today, despite a brief return). Some questions I pose are: Where are the backups? Why hasn’t anyone else (seemingly) noticed? Is this a common occurence in the forum community or something specific to these forums?

As a regular poster on these sites, I have found that many of the topics are helpful, concise, and above all, friendly. Some explanation for these periods of unexplained downtime must be presented. I recently switched from Mac-BB to MacSerialJunkie due to the downtime. I must say I miss it.

Some may remember the trouble caused GoDaddy.com when they suspended seclists.org for allegedly publishing MySpace user/pass combos. There is even NoDaddy.com site in which employee’s GoDaddy complain about their boss, and customers complain about support. If one were to speculate that the problems with these forums are caused by their registars, then I have a another question. Are these (and other) incompetent domain registars be a nagging problem that webmasters will have to deal with?

Thats all my comments. What are yours?

Edit: No MSJ is giving the following page using OpenDNS:

I’ve just spent two days trying to install Alex King’s brilliant plugin Popularity Contest. After loads of Google searches and the help of some people much smarter than myself I finally have it running in WordPress 2.5.1.

There were problems with the path the plugin was searching for wp-blog-header. I found the solution for that on WordPress.org. I was still getting fatal errors when trying to initialize the plugin though.

It seemed Popularity Contest just couldn’t create the tables it needed to run. So I found some instructions on manually adding the necessary tables using MyPhpAdmin Godaddy’s hosting control panel. That didn’t go well. All I got were syntax errors in MyPhpAdmin.

I finally found someone who dug into Popularity Contest’s guts and patched it to work with WordPress 2.5.1. Now, there are alot of patched versions of Popularity Contest floating around out there. I tried 4 of them before I found one that worked. The wpguy cracked it and shows you how to patch it yourself. He also has a ready patched version for download.

In my search for a fix I also found a great widget for Popularity Contest. Just upload and activate it and you have a nice popular posts widget to stick in your sidebar. It even has a setting for the number of posts you want to display.

I’m sure Alex will release a version of Popularity Contest for WordPress 2.5.1 soon, but if you can’t wait the patched version from wpguy works now.

I want to make sure that everyone out there on the internet knows about the pitfalls that are on the net. Many times companies can exist with very little structure and those companies can and do do business in areas of crucial importance to people and businesses.

One such company was exposed in March of 2007. The company name was RegisterFly.com and they were a domain name registrar and web site hosting company, although Godaddy their primary business was registering domain names for people. Registerfly.com was a reseller of Enom, an accredited domain registrar out of Toronto Canada until 2006 when they acquired a company that was in itself an ICANN accredited registrar at which point RegisterFly became an accredited registrar. This company handled over 2,000,000 domains for appx 900,000 people and they were not structured well enough to handle the business.

In March 2007 the company had a falling out between the two owners Kevin Medina and John Naruszewicz who were also intimate partners and as their unprofessional partnership fell apart it became a problem in the workplace as well and the company started to fall apart. For a time the owners of the 2MM domain names could not manage their domains and the status of those domains ownership was in jeopardy. All of this could have been avoided if the company had had a solid business structure. The lesson here is that you need to throughly research the companies you do business with online because unlike Brick and mortar companies you may not be able to see those companies and how they are structured so the best way to learn about them is through other customers and the people who work at those companies.
